I am, like many, fed up to the back teeth with hearing about Megxit. What follows is my personal opinion
I am not a devout royalist, avidly following every fart and hiccup of the royal family but I do feel that they are a part of what makes us English. And now, thanks to Harry and Meghan, we are being inundated with as much, if not more, media coverage of every twist and turn of a not so grand affair, the royal split, than we were treated to throughout their romance and wedding.
I always said it would end in tears one way or another. I personally never rated her even before she met Harry. She certainly wasn’t an A lister, lucky to be a Z lister with her lack of acting talent. I only knew of her existence due to watching a second rate American TV series. You know the sort, starts of well, with a good concept, but runs out of steam after the third season and drags on for far too many more, using increasingly ridiculous and contrived plot-lines until it finally withers and dies in some small corner of a streaming service. And our wannabe princess? A glorified clothes-horse, parading around in high-end fashion garments that cling so tightly they leave very little to the imagination. To be fair, she wasn’t the only clothes-horse on the show. I presume these shows are less about the acting talent than they are about influencing the trendy 30-something, young professionals, the main demographic for the show, to go out and buy the designer clothes they’ve just seen. So what on earth made her think she would have the breeding or the class to become a successful member of the British royal family?
In a true Cilla move by a mutual friend she goes on a blind date where she’s introduced to her prince and it’s “love at first sight”. After a very public courtship, sprinkled with lawsuits, she got her fairytale wedding. (Actually, I think the wedding scene at the end of The Sound Of Music had more class ). And for someone moaning about the publicity, their wedding was a complete publicity garnering spectacle from first to last. Where I worked we had life sized cardboard cutouts of the pair so folks could have their photo taken with the “royal couple”. It stood for weeks in the reception area. To me, a humble English citizen, however, it seems the reality hasn’t been all she might have expected. Perhaps she found that life as a royal ain’t what she thought it would be. She isn’t a princess for a start and Duchess doesn’t quite have the same kudos. Not that which title she has mattered to the American public. As a few American friends of ours have stated, “we’ve finally got an American into the royal family”. I don’t think they’re so impressed now though, since she’s turned her back on them as well. Being a royal entails doing your duty whether you feel like it or not. And there are ways of maintaining your privacy, others manage it well enough. You can’t stamp your feet and throw a strop without consequences. And that is what she has done. She now doesn’t like life in the public glare so has run away from it all. Very publicly. Leaving her husband to sort out the mess before joining her in what I interpret as “partial exile”. It is not difficult to see where people are making comparisons to Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson, I had those same thoughts. I have seen articles stating she feels that the British have driven her out, that there are racist reasons, she’s from the wrong background, that she hasn’t fitted in. Perhaps she didn’t try hard enough to adapt to their way of doing things. Whatever our reasons, unfortunately there are a lot of the British public, myself included, who have not taken to her, so are showing no sympathy for her plight. In my opinion all she has done is gone from being a bad actress to being an even worse royal, creating chaos in her wake. Nothing she or they say or do will change that opinion. Let them go, I say, and good luck to them. Maybe she’ll finally make it as a Disney princess. Hopefully someone will ensure she is unable to profit from all this in the future and she sinks back into the oblivion from which she came. And soon, so we can all get back to arguing about Brexit!
